animate displacement of hair particles

Good evening,
is there a way to animate the displacement of hair particles? I have some long grass type stuff hanging over a cave entrance and want a character to part that and walk through. If I cant do that, I will change it to modeled grass and use curves and hooks to do it.
Please let me know.
