==> What Blender build to use? <==

Post  skipvicente on Tue Jul 15, 2014 12:41 pm

I first would like to thank any and all help that this post may generate. I'm fairly new to the use of Blender and have been granted the privilege to have a powerful pc because of my company.

I am using blender with the use of tutorial and forums. I would like to use the proper Blender build but I'm TOO inexperienced to know what build I should be using. If someone can advise on what Blender build will best work for the PC I have.

This is what I have to work with:

Win 7 Enterprise
2 Xeon E5 Processors
NVIDIA Quadro K2000 (I use to render in blender)
NVIDIA Tesla K20c (I can't see this in blender)

I'm currently using blender 2.71+OSL and learning to create and one day contribute to the blender community.

Hey there and welcome!

So typically, people use the newest build of Blender, found here: http://www.blender.org/download/
and just select the proper operating system.

However, you can also obtain builds from: http://www.graphicall.org/
At this site you can usually get experimental builds or ones with specific features not yet implemented into the main build, such as yafaray, luxrender, etc. (these can sometimes be buggy so be sure to read their descriptions for known issues)

So overall, it all depends on your needs. If you just need basic Blender functionality, go with the one found on blender's website. If you want something specific such as a different renderer, you may need to pick up a different build from graphicall. One thing to keep in mind though, is you can always have multiple builds on your computer, so you don't have to worry about uninstalling/reinstalling if you want to experiment with different builds.
