selected object no longer shows in outliner

Good evening,
for some reason in my current file selected objects no longer shows in outliner (selected view).  The do show in (all scenes or current scene).
This file is a copy of an earlier file and that file still works proper.  I have not had this problem before.
I found that I have one layer that will show up, but no others.
Any ideas on how to fix? Please let me know.

Just found that selecting layers is not changing the layers in the properties like it should.
Wasted your time. I had "use local layers" selected. I use that when keying the voiceovers so I can show a side view and a front view. I cant believe I have been doing this for so many years and never ran into this.
