Your First Digital Gear

Back in 2001, when Nelly Furtado and Coldplay were the New Kids on the Block (aha, aha  ), I celebrated getting my first duty assignment after technical training by splurging on not only a digital camera but also an amazing MP3 player (just months before the iPod was introduced).

Because my memory card was 8MB, I shot with the much more manageable resolution of 640x480 and not the super resolution of 800x600 (which had more noise than a Red Hot Chilly Peppers Concert at Cicadatown during the 17-year cycle).

The coolest thing?  I could use the same memory card from the digital camera with my MP3 player!
I loaded it with "Fly Like a Bird", "Yellow", and two other songs.  That was four songs of pure transportable awesomeness.  Sure, it was like 16 minutes of music, but the player was as small as a cassette and I could skip tracks like a CD player!

One of the greatest things that ever happened to me was when I bought an MP3 player. It was 8 or 10 years ago.  I found one i liked, and bought it, its a Sansa something or other, I still have it, I keep it in my work truck to listen to all my techno/calypso beat remakes of 80's TV show theme songs that i just can't get on the radio here where I live.  I dumped the original firmware and got Rockbox, from www.rockbox.org, an awesome alternative.  it was 100x better than the original firmware, plus you could play a bunch of nifty games like  space invaders, and DOOM!,  it also could show videos, and just to prove that it could, they offered on the website the download of a movie formatted to fit it.  It was an open source movie called......

I was like, "what's an open source movie?", so I researched it and that's how I heard of Blender.

that MP3 player, for that reason, is probably the best purchase I've ever made.




funny side note, after i bought it, a guy i worked with, an IT guy brought in his mp3 player.  he had bought it around 1983, the day after mp3's were invented.  It cost $9000, could hold 3 songs (or 4 really short ones) and was the size and weight of a cinder block.  (i'm exaggerating, of course.  it was actually more the size and weight of a brick).  He also brought in his digital camera, from around 1974.  I used to tell him if he wanted to bring it to work to take some pictures I could swing by his house and we could haul it in my truck, and I'd help him carry it inside.  It took a 3.5" floppy disk.  the funny thing was that he had spent tons of money getting this stuff when it first came out, and then had no interest in buying anything since then.

Hm, I know I had a digit camera back in the day, but I have no clue what the brand or type was. (Although I know exactly what drawer it's in back at my parent's house in my bedroom).

Hmmm I guess im a bit of a dinosaur just got my first digital camera because none caried things like shutter speed and f-stop like my 35mm. Still dont have any digital music devices recorded my albums (those were vinal disks about 20 in. across music was recorded and played on for some of you younger people )to cassett ,cassett to disk.
