Been a bit too busy
Anyone else been feeling this way? I've been working on several projects (non-Blender) and haven't been able to do much with Blender and the like.
One of the major projects is a charcoal that I'm working on for my wife. I don't think I'm going to make the deadline I've given myself (her birthday), but I'm hoping to be 90% there. I'll upload some images when I get a bit further along if anyone is interested.
Other than that it's been all the summer stuff that really takes all my time. Thank goodness for the quickly approaching Fall season!!

Re: Been a bit too busy
I must agree with you there.
Despite being on summer vacation for the past few months, I really haven't been feeling like doing much with Blender, especially when I use Blender nearly every day at work. I do have plenty of ideas, but getting around to them seems highly unlikely, especially considering classes start up in two weeks.

I agrees.
I haven't loaded Blender since December 2011* when I was working on my wife and my 13th wedding anniversary. I did upgrade Blender in March, but didn't do anything with it.
In addition to not having any time, I just haven't had any motivation (or ideas).
* Okay, I recently redid our squadron logo using Blender. We got a new commander and he wanted a 300dpi version, so I made a 6K resolution @ 300dpi just to combat any future needs (the file ended up being 300mb!) I took the liberty to make a few modifications with the constellation alignment and the shooting star's trail. I don't think anybody will care too much. I will say that I've forgotten all the keyboard shortcuts--I had to google even the most basic stuff.

Re: Been a bit too busy
Right there with you all.
Been busy and reached the "I'm fed up of this project and don't want to do the last 2% to finish it off" phase. I suppose everyone does that? I wouldn't know it's my first project Back on it now. I'm determined to finish it even if it's not as good as I hoped it would be.

Re: Been a bit too busy
June 29th we had a nasty, nasty wind storm here in WV. A "derecho".....http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/deadly-super-derecho-strikes-m/67383
A state of emergency was declared in 53 of 55 counties here. We were without power for 8 days, many were without power for 2 weeks. There were literally thousands of trees down in the county i live in alone. I work for the local telephone company and so for the next 2 months i worked lots and lots and lots of overtime.
We're finally pretty much back to normal, but i've got 2-3 months worth of things i needed to do that got put off 2 months that i'm trying to catch up.
And then, in an unrelated problem, i had installed "blenderboot" as a dual boot on my PC, and was loving it....in the very, very, very limited use i had had a chance to use it.. then, in my stupidity, i upgraded to ubuntu 12.04, which was entirely my fault, and not that of paperjon, the creator of blender boot, who plainly had said not to do that!!! So anyway, my PC was basically unusable, other than working off of a ubuntu live disk.
So anyway, i decided this weekend to wipe it all out, and just install ubuntu 12.04 on my PC. (oh yeah, i forgot, got a nasty rootkit virus on my laptop a few months ago, so i went with ubuntu on that and am liking it.) I had some music, pictures, videos, etc that i needed to get off my PC, so i've been moving them to my laptop via usb drive. I just about got it all, and then this morning, my PC is down....I can't get past the HP splash screen. So i guess i'm going to have to revisit my "new PC plan" that I had put off for a while. I'll probably have to wait a while to save up for what i really want.
I've been too busy to even think about blendering, but now i'm really wanting too, and I hate trying to use my laptop...oh well....hopefully soon, I really miss it

Re: Been a bit too busy
It's good to hear from you again! We were definitely missing you around here.
That storm... that sounds intense. What surprised me though was the wind speed mentioned in the article. We commonly get that sort of wind during the winter (even faster in the mountains), yet we don't see that sort of damage. I wonder if it has something to do with the air being thinner here from altitude as we're 5-6000 feet higher than WV. Then again, we don't really have any trees on the prairies so maybe we just don't see the effect of the wind.
Those computer troubles sound like quite the pain too. That HP rig, do you think the motherboard might be dead? Perhaps the BIOS chip might be screwed up.

Welcome back. Thought you'd been quiet recently, I'm not surprised now
The storm sounds hellish, glad things are getting back to normal.
The HP thing sounds like the hard drive may have died. Have you got an external caddy you can plug it into and try reading on another PC?

Re: Been a bit too busy
My first thought was that it was the motherboard, but then I tried it again and it came up the next day, so I'm back to pulling off a few files to my laptop. I guess i'll go with my original plan for now of loading ubuntu...it seems to be working fine.
As to the storm, i think the biggest thing is that there are sooooooo many trees, the only places around here that isn't 100% covered with trees are places that have been cleared. And, occuring when it did in the summertime, all the trees had all their leaves, so they caught more wind. We have some pretty decent wins around here, maybe gusts up to 50-60 miles per hour, on occasions, but this was around 90 mph sustained in some areas. I was in a couple of places where our cable ran thru the woods on hillsides and there were multiple trees that i estimate to be 70+ feet high that had been blown down/uprooted.
A major problem was the damage to the power transmission lines. http://dailymail.com/News/201208200208

The old computer seems to be working just fine...i just got ubuntu loaded. I'm really liking it so far (a couple of hours )
I just did the test render for the blender benchmark site. and it was 58.59 seconds, which is about 18 seconds faster than it was with blenderboot and over a minute faster than on windows vista on the same box, if i remember correctly.

You're back up and running again. Great news
Look forward to seeing your next project, welcome back.

could you post that benchmark blend file?

Think I might have found it. Is it a red ball with several glass cubes?

Z. Just had a look at the benchmark blend. Got a dissapointingly slow result on my new PC until I realised the file is locked to one thread. Is it supposed to be?
Canged it to auto and it reduced the render time by 80%. Might be worth trying that on yours if it's a multi core CPU.

Wow! You're right, I totally missed that. I suspect it's supposed to be that way though. Yeah, mine cut the time down to a quarter of what it was initially!

Re: Been a bit too busy
So what exactly is it benchmarking if it's not using all the hardware available? I find that slightly odd

Re: Been a bit too busy
Another "state of emergency" here in good ol' WV! we got around 2' - 3 1/2 ' of wet heavy snow. trees down, and building collapsing all around. the county I live in is one of the very worst. probably 6-8 buildings including 2 grocery stores and an apartment building have collapsed from the weight of the snow. I have a big 24' x 40' or so carport that collapsed. Power is out in a lot of places.
all from the "Sandy" storm. it never really got cold at all though. probably didn't drop below 25 at any point, which i guess explains why the snow is so wet and heavy.
Looks like i'll be working lots and lots of overtime again.

Oh no!
The forces of nature are conspiring against your free time!
2-3 feet of wet snow must be crazy heavy. I don't believe I've ever experienced that much at one time!
I hope everything works out for you and that you finally get some more free time!

Re: Been a bit too busy
i can remember a couple of times having over 40 inches, but not this heavy wet snow like this time.
It is supposed to be close to 50 degrees by Sunday, so most of this snow will be gone, but the damage has already been done.

Re: Been a bit too busy
Big Z,
This post is going to sound odd, I think... I know you work for the wireless industry and not the power, but since your paths cross sometimes I just want to give a big shout-out to you and your crews... We lost power for a few days following the derecho storm, but after this storm we only lost power for 18 hours and had good information feeds from the various companies running the lines. And I think it was due to the efforts everybody from Verizon, AT&T, and the power companies (BGE here) did to restore everything then and get everything ready for this storm that allowed our area to come back online so quickly.
I hope you are able to get a decent amount of time to recover and rest following the surge to restore services. Be safe!

Re: Been a bit too busy
Thanks. i actually work for the telephone company, wired not wireless. so we are busy putting up lines and reconnecting people and keeping generators running at our remote facilities when commercial power is out.
i know that after working long hours, 14, 15 hours and i'm tired and want to get home, i'll pass the power guys still working hard. those guys put in longer, hard hours.
we ran into a crew of power company employees yesterday that were just getting started on their first job after driving here from oklahoma. not sure how far that is exactly, but i know its a long, long way.

14 to 15 hours does not leave much time for Blending!
Hope everything is back to normal soon mate!
