Re: Scraps and Doodles
I'd like a working prototype!
very nice! I ran into a guy the other day that had one for his land surveying business. it was very cool.

How many polies are on this?
I always kinda envied (in a good way, of course) your attention to detail when it comes to machinery stuff. Great job!

Re: Scraps and Doodles
Thanks Dobi! This is about 2.5 million rendered polygons. I don't know exactly how many raw polies there are, but it's about 200k. Almost all of this is subdivision so there are a lot of supporting loops on everything. They add up.
The bolts/nuts are all mesh(thanks to the included Bolt Factory plugin). Some of the brackets I modeled as flat planar objects before using a solidify mod on them and the cables are all curve objects.
Details!

I'm slightly proud of the design of the bottom equipment mounting plate. You just pop that little sucker in diagonally, and those four little bit keep it from sliding out in three directions. A clamp locks in the fourth direction.

And I've been making shaders!
Here's what I've got so far:

changed the arms to be Carbon Fibre. I like this a lot more but the UVs need a bit of fixing.

Ditto. Sweet work here, Dan. 2.5 million rendered polygons. Nice. How did you come up with the idea of this rotocopter as a subject?

Nice aluminum right there. Care to share the node system for it? Don't worry, I won't copy it - what I usually do is take the shader as it is but tweak it in my own way.

Re: Scraps and Doodles
Of course! It's a really simple shader. I used a seamless "brushed" texture for the brushing effect. I made this texture in Photoshop years ago by rendering noise and motion blurring it, if memory serves.
The two bright/contrast nodes are simply to tweak those values for their two uses: the faint color overlay, and the displacement.

A few more sweet shots:

I also made this Carbon Fibre texture just for this project. Use however you wish.

(Mask; if you want to tweak coloration or something. Might be nice as a reflection mask as well)

Re: Scraps and Doodles
Man, this is awesome work Daniel! One tiny thing struck me as I looked at this so I did a Google search and found that the vast majority of the copters out there had much larger props on them. There were a few that were scaled pretty close to yours... anyway, just an observance and I'm sure you looked over all that. But other than that difference I'd think that I was looking at the real deal! Superb work!!

Grr, now that you mention it...
You get so blind to that sort of thing sometimes...
Thanks!

Wowzers, the amount of detail put into this is amazing. (The claws look so scary---more instant cattle delivery than Amazon! )
This is fantastic work, RR. I'm really excited to see what you have in store for this bad boy. (btw, isn't this your rig on the cover? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.])

Thanks!
And nope, I never made any characters like that with articulated fingers on the hands. Similar though.BnBGobo99 wrote: (btw, isn't this your rig on the cover?

You should. I bet you'd be pretty great at it if you kept at it. You're a heck of a technician with Blender, and your renders prove you have a great eye for finding concepts.

Aww shucks, you're too kind!
Thing is, I've never actually been good at organic characters; that's definitely a weakness of mine.

30 years from now, when you see all the teens driving one of these around town, you'll be wondering why you didn't patent the design.
