Skagen Watch

Post  Radialronnie on Sat Jun 02, 2012 1:08 am

Was suddenly and inexplicably inspired to create a watch.
After much prodding, encouraging, and threatening from Scott and Martin, I finally finished it.

Interesting background on the glass;
(IRC log)
So here's the funny deal. I rendered this friggen thing for nearly 20 hours and it wasn't getting better. The grain had all disappeared at the 3 hour mark, but the fireflys under the glass were as strong as ever at 20 hours.
(9:21:58 PM) RadialRonnie: So finally I thought, I can't wait for this to finish, and since I had only set it to render 3500 passes (can't change it after the fact), I figured it wouldn't be cleared at that time  anyway so I canceled it and set about fixing it in photoshop. Well I got the scathingly brilliant idea to try to completely create the glass in PS. So that's what I did. I removed the glass and rerendered while I was prepping dinner.
(9:22:23 PM) RadialRonnie: Exactly 2 hours later I opened the window again, and the render was *flawless*. Not a gritty spot, or a firefly anywhere.
(9:23:25 PM) RadialRonnie: I popped it into PS and using curves I traced the ecliptic, then masked out the two middle edges of the two seperate reflections. Short story shorter, it worked like a dandy and the final result ensues a few minutes later.
(9:24:29 PM) RadialRonnie: The one and only problem with doing this is that you don't get any refraction effect, but since the glass has only a very gentle convex shape on the front, the lack of it isn't noticable
(9:26:00 PM) RadialRonnie: This is the twenty hour render; [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
(9:26:11 PM) RadialRonnie: With 'real', rendered glass.
(9:26:36 PM) RadialRonnie: And this is the raw two-hour render with no postpro and no glass; [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
(9:26:56 PM) RadialRonnie: As I said, the metals all were grain free in short order but that glass... @_@

that is nice. and a good solution for the glass.

i've tried a few cycles renders that can never get past the little white dots as well.

Two-year update! Skagen has shared this watch on their official facebook page. The associated caption reads "TIME to spotlight a Skagen fan! We LOVE customers like [me] who mixed two passions, photography and his Skagen 924XLBXB, to create art!"

WWwooooo HOooo!!
Not only did they share it, they thought it was a photo. sunny
