Learn water simulation
Good morning,
I need to learn water simulation and I am looking for advice and direction for tutorials. I have one scene with a character running his hand through the water at the edge of a small pond and fish splashing out.
I have another scene with a motorcycle splashing through a shallow and narrow creek. Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Scooter

Water simulation... can be a difficult area of Blender. It's easy to set up, usually just need to specify a fluid, domain, and obstacle; but to get the right effect can sometimes be not as easy. Now, I don't know of any recent tutorials off hand, however, I can provide you a link to the documentation which will tell you what each of the different options will do under the fluid settings: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Learn water simulation
Good evening,
Thanks for the reply, I will check the manual and see if I can find some tutorial examples. I will set up an experiment starting small.
Thanks,
Scooter

Re: Learn water simulation
Good morning,
I have been experimenting and think I have figured out how to make simulation do what I want. It appears as though I have to make the water a "fluid" and let it bake into the pond shape object as an "obstacle shell" and let it settle then have the characters set up as "obstacle" that has been set "export animated" run through their animation all during the same bake.
I looks like the set should be broken up for camera shots to reduce the size of the domain to each shot.
Does anyone know of a way to let the pond water settle into the pond shape before the actual scene bake is made? If I remember correct, cloth simulation has "pre roll" for this.
Any tips will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scooter

Re: Learn water simulation
I'm not entirely sure if you can do that.

Re: Learn water simulation
Good evening,
I can probably let the water settle in when the camera is on the character just before the water shot.
I have found a new question. I have an experiment set up with a cube dropping in the water and it looks good when I play it, but I noticed the cube actually affects the water before it even touches it. I can correct it after the bake by moving the cubes key frames ahead a couple of frames, but that does not seem right.
Any ideas about that.
Thanks,
Scooter

Re: Learn water simulation
With the domain object selected, go to the fluid boundary tab. Is the box checked for removing the air gap between the obstacle and fluid?

Good evening,
I keep forgetting to mention I am still using 2.58. Mine say's "hide fluid surface" in that area and it is checked. I am very reluctant to update blender since everything is working, but I may have to.
Thanks,
Scooter

If you're reluctant to update, then don't. Instead if you go to Blender's website, download the .zip version instead of the .exe. That way you can run the new version without getting rid of the older version. If it ends up working and no issues appear, use the new version. If it screws things up, then just delete the folder you downloaded.

Re: Learn water simulation
Good evening,
I am actually referring to problems with existing constraints and animation that I have had problems with. The biggest problem is how long it takes to stumble into them. Once I get past learning simulation, I will have used all of the Blenders tools I need for this movie. I may create a copy folder and experiment with updating when I get time some day.
Thanks for trying to help.
