Help with UV
Hi guys
I am new here on the forum. I need some help. I wrote a series (x4vol) Scifi short stories books and am making a 3d Animation/Film movie starting with the first book. I am learning many programs as I make the movie. I am using iClone with 3dXchange Pipeline.
Here is the problem. I have purchased some space ship models. I wanted to use Substance Painter 1.0 to paint them as needed for each scene and Substance Designer 4 to make textures. As I discovered, none of the models had a detailed UV to work with on the model.
I have the latest Blender version but have no time to learn it right now. Q- Is it possible to use Blender to get UVs from the models? I am new to this so I have no Idea about 3d modeling and UVs and such. Without the UVs, I am unable to use these Spaceship models for the Movie. I also have Adobe CS6 Photoshop. This is all very confusing to me and my time is already taken up working on the movie and learning those programs. Anyone here know how this could be done? If so, is there anyone that would volunteer to assist me with this? I can only offer you a free copy of the complete Series ; " The Universe vs " Book 1 (movie Project) "The Beast of Harmala".
I am also looking for 3d Spaceship (super futuristic) model makers that want to volunteer their work for movie credit. That is the best solution for me as I will get the full UV to work with and paint as needed. The Movie is NON-Profit. A fun project and to learn 3d animation/film production based on my book. Please see my blog.... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
You can see what I hyave done so far on the movie here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Some of this will be redone as time goes and I get more experience.
Thanks for any help or tips

Re: Help with UV
Bray42, welcome to the forum! Texturing is a profession in itself and takes years to master, I am just a newbie in that field myself. I would recommend CGCookie's "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]" video to get a head start. I'm a bit surprised that a paid model wasn't already unwrapped--but the good thing is that non-organic shapes can sometimes be easier because there are clear places to mark the seams (like at 90 degree angles or when two different types of metal meet, etc).
Besides the storyline, have you worked out both the script as well as the shots required? For each shot, do you have an idea of what assets will be needed (sound clips, dialog, models, textures, IK/FK rigs, etc)? There is a program called [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] that will help you organize and keep track of everything. Get the free download, there is no trial period or other limitations. The add-ons and cloud subscription are nice-to-haves if you need them, but small team's and one-man-show's can do just fine without them. The script portion of the program takes prominence, but its power is in the character and scene information windows.
3d film makers have a bad habit (myself included) of doing long takes, needless motions and other "time fillers" to make "economic use of the assets" and increase time. I would look for those in your script and eliminate them. A 30-second commercial that wows the audience is better than a 10-minute short that drags on and on. Remember, the wise wisdom says to never do anything more than three times--so if you have a shot of a space raider coming from behind your hero ship and firing at it, don't show that same angle more than three times.
Good luck with your film, sorry I couldn't help more with the UV portion and also for all the unsolicited advice.

Thank you for the advice and tips.... I wrote my books and use a script writing program called Scriptvox. It really does the job. Also as the books are short story versions, that allowed me to be more flexible with the movie script, scenes and models used when making the movie. As I am just learning all of my 3d animation programs I am first making a non pro version of the movie. As you know the computer power ability is crucial so I had to buy a more powerful system as well. I found that the character and prop quality is the biggest problem as all have to be purchased or made. The pro level models costs a lot of $$$ each and that is a huge problem with no sponsors. For this version I can only do what I can afford on top of buying all the programs and new computer. In Dec 2014 iClone 6 comes out and it will make a huge huge difference in quality so I carry on doing what I can do. Next year I hope to do a much more pro level movie version.
Anyway, thank you again for your kind words and input.

Well, I can't help you with that, but I can help you a bit. If you ever run into a flat surface (ex: Plane, Cube) with multiple subdivisions, or more simply cuts, sometimes they can be a bit unaligned. You can use Cube Projection to solve that.
