Unwrapping uv and uv map
Hello
I am really new to 3d modeling and have a nub question hopefully someone can help with.
Whenever I go to unwrap my mesh the objects shown on my uv map don't match what I'm mapping. For instance I tried to map a flattened cube where 4 sides where short and 2 sides are large (screenshot is below). Somehow when I unwrap it all the faces are the same size square in my uv map.
I have watched many tuts and combed the forums here and on blenderartist.org (moderators won't let new people post there for some reason lol).
So here I am looking to the good people of Blender World for help.
I have tried marking seams and not marking seams I've tried using all the different unwrapping options when you press u. And I've loaded factory settings to make sure I haven't accidentally changed some setting that is causing me problems and still when I try to follow along in a tutorial for uv mapping my uv map doesn't display the different faces of my mesh to scale.
Thanks in advance to any suggestions!

Re: Unwrapping uv and uv map
Just out of curiosity, did you scale the cube in object mode or edit mode?

I suspected as much. Alright, try giving it a go where you do the scaling in edit mode and then unwrap it.

Re: Unwrapping uv and uv map
ok that worked thanks so much!
so whenever I do any scaling or push/pull or any of that I need to do it in edit mode or it won't scale correctly in my uv map?

I'm glad it worked!
It's a good rule of thumb that if you're rotating or scaling, to do them in edit mode. Think about it like if you have a stress ball. If you squish it down, the image on the ball gets squished down as well, same principle applies for if you were to scale in object mode. Where as for edit mode it would be as if you squish it down, and then apply the image on the ball.... if that makes sense.

Re: Unwrapping uv and uv map
The screenshot was of a smart uv project I think I can't remember but I tried putting seams as you suggested and got the same result however it seems if I had scaled my cube in edit mode instead of object mode my uv map shows my faces in the correct scale.
So problem soved I guess thanks for the responses.
I will say I wish I could scale in object mode and have it come out but I will just have to break myself of that and do everything in edit.

Oops that last response was supposed to be to a pm someone sent me but I put it here by mistake.
Anyway thanks to everyone for there help.
I was a little worried I wouldn't get a response when I saw the last post on here was on the 27th of last month but you guys are awesome. I am enjoying playing with blender and udk and whenever I have a problem I can usually find the answer myself but it's nice to know there is help if I need it.
Cheers!

That was me--I misunderstood the question and gave the wrong answer, lol. So I just deleted my reply.Harm26 wrote:Oops that last response was supposed to be to a pm someone sent me but I put it here by mistake.

Yeah... there hasn't been many new posts since we aren't a huge community to begin with and most of us have gotten busy with life recently. Although most of us do check in regularly just in case somebody needs some help or feedback.
