Re: CreativeNewbies Discussion Thread

Nixon,

Thanks for your input--if I were to boil your post down into two ideas, they would be: (1) How is the creative exchange going to happen across mediums, especially for those with tools that will require additional learning before attempting the task?, and (2) How could the community's talents be utilized together into group effort(s) that would enhance everybody's focus medium while at the same time contributing to the overall project?  Is that correct?

So--before I tackle each of those individually, I would like to state that CreativeNewbies has such a broad scope for two reasons: (1) New users have difficulties finding friendly atmospheres that help them grow out of their shell.  Thick skin must be learned... but CN will help them develop that skin at their own pace, not forced on them BA/CGTalk-style.  (2) I learned a lot about programming be learning electronics.  I also learned painting through MentalRay, one of 3ds Max's render engines.  Users come to participate in their chosen field, woodwork for example, and learn tricks or inspiration from other fields on the site, sculpting for example.

To address your comments:
(1) CN will not be tool-focused.  The best way to stunt your growth is to focus on the tool.  An artist who follows a Blender tutorial to do a task will learn Blender.  An artist who follows an art tutorial with a Blender wiki or Python e-manual open learns how to do art.  They learn the theory and the process, not which buttons to push.  Can a C++ tutorial teach me Python?  No--but a C++ tutorial on how to build a MySQL interface plus Google and the man docs can teach me how to build a MySQL interface in Python.  Is it harder?  Yes.  Will some people give up?  Yes.  Will some succeed?  Yes--and they will be better for it.  We're not here to hold people's hands, but we will give them a comfortable and friendly environment to fail, brush themselves off, and try again.  Those who give up after the first fall wouldn't have made it anyway.  Having said that--we are of course going to offer "intro to Dremel 4000" and "Maya for the first-time-user" kind of content.

(2) It's a great idea--something Scott has also suggested proposed and we'll build into the site once we get critical mass to have that kind of participation.

Let's also face the truth: the Blender community is dying--I'm not talking about BlenderWorld specifically (although there's only four or five of us left who post anymore), but if you look at Ton's weekly meeting notes, Google Summer of Code participation, and the other forums--we gain users just as fast as we lose them, but many of the ones being lost are long-time users.  I wanted to have a home online where I could share my artwork with friends like you guys and get critical feedback from well-meaning people, not mean people.  I want a place where I can get to know people: their likes, dislikes, hobbies, favorite shows, and sore spots.  I also want to help others improve in whatever hobby they chose--even if I don't care for the subject myself.  Learning and growing in one field magnifies abilities in all other fields.  Plus it gets people away from the controller or touch screen and using creativity to make something--even if it's something that requires a controller or touch screen.  There is no home out there for this, only we can make it.

And we are going to be the ones to make it, one line of code at a time.

I agree tool focus wont get too far in terms of creativity. Introduction to stuff however can be a great hint into a deeper concentration of certain fields.
And yeah cross platform competence is always a great help for lot of situations!

About the blender community dying :
I have the impression that the blender community has shifted a bit since the software got more professional i think alot of the users already have some bit of skill under their belt and kinda figure stuff in a  more streamlined fashion, wich results on lesser lowend-skiller noise/ stuff adressed to lowend newbies.
I feel that by now theres alot of blender users wich keep kinda calm about their stuff and just go under the radar in a way. Also that blender is for everyone kinda vibe went away in favor of being honest about..hey its aimed at enthusiasts and professionals by now cuz its very well massive to grasp. So quality mentoring becomes more of a market than it was before.

I also noticed that trend tho, probably my impression is just sort of a safety net to not get discouraged that blender might be disbanded. (however i m sure i could go ahead and still use blender and never ever unleash its potential the way it is now, no further updates required)

#btw people could probably use steam group voice chat to discuss stuff aswell ..this might be a nice option to talk to each others with less typing noise at night ;D..i just figured since i got alot of the people on my list there too

Xray, if you could let me know what you would like your @creativenewbies.com email to be (you can PM me)--Yodaman921 and I used our first.last, but you can do crazy.smasher.4 if that's how you roll. Mad <I'm gonna wreck it!>

Oh, and also if you can check your PM for login details to CN, we're holding our conversations there.

I'll have a new set of review slides up this weekend.  I've been studying how to deal with passwords and usernames, that's been a bit of a challenge. :p  I may cheat and ask you guys if we can just buy a pre-built module and integrate it that way, but we have plenty of time to get that working.

If you are in the mood/market for web-development books, there is a book called "Learning PHP, MySQL & JavaScript, 4th Edition" that I've been reading that seems really good.  It's out in stores... not yet it seems.  But anyways, I've also been reading "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" and "Head First HTML5", so I've been getting some good pointers from those.

Btw, the Head First series are quirky and don't hold a lot of information compared to similarly-priced books, but they present it really well and effectively so you end up learning more.

A teaser:

As simple as that was, it took a lot of time to research and experiment. :S

The icons are just temporary until we can create ones of our own... that and they don't match the content, but that's okay.

Cole, if you are interested in helping out just PM me or Scott and we'll send you the password to the CN forum and you can join in the discussion there. Both Scott and I took a pause while we were in school and such, so we're off the timeline set out in the previous posts. I'm confident on a March launch with a smaller scale than outlined, but by the end of 2015 we should be at 100%.

I've been learning the languages (HTML, CSS, PHP, JS, MySQL) as I go--so I'm slowly working all the pieces together. I start language school in Feb, so I hope to have all the heavy lifting done before then.

That looks really nice. I'll have to get back to more icon development in the upcoming days.

I think all the interested folks have already swung over to CN, but in case you are still interested to see how the site is developing, take a gander at our Landing (main page) prototype:

All,

I wanted to apologize for spamming everybody a few years ago when we opened CN. Looking back that was a bad call to email you all and send PMs--if I relaunch CN I certainly won't do that practice again.

I want to thank all of you who helped out in the creation process, especially Yodaman who put a lot of his own time and effort into building the site.
