tangent shading causing unwanted color bands in characters hair

Post  Scooter2 on Sat Jul 26, 2014 2:43 pm

Good afternoon,
When I use tangent shading, it causes strange color bands in my characters hair. Attached are images with tangent shading on and with it off. Is there a setting to prevent the strange color bands, or distribute them better. Does hair have normal that need set like faces and vertices?
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Scooter

After much experimentation, I have found there is a difference between using tangent shading in the strand settings vs using tangent shading in the material settings. I do not know which is proper for hair, but I was using tangent shading in the strand settings that produced the strange color bands.
Also, turning on tangent shading lightens the hair colors up a lot and if I use tangent shading in strand settings I can turn up surface diffuse to darken it, but it makes the color bands worse.
Any input will be helpful.
Thanks,
Scooter

Sorry, but again out of my depth here. I did, however, take a minute or two to look at tangent in general and it seems to be giving you a different "take" on the interaction with light in the scene. Are you using AO and or direct lighting? If it were me, I'd try to keep it simple and utilize the texture node instead of trying to get what I want using two separate inputs.

fixed

Good afternoon,
after much experimentation, I have found that the diffuse value was too high. I dropped it from .8 to .5 and dropped the surface diffuse distance in the strand settings to 0. The hair is much better.
Thanks
