Godzilla (Movie Review)
Ah, Godzilla, where do I begin?
Let's start with a clip from Battle LA:
That was a good movie. Let's take a look at How Pacific Rim Should Have Ended:
Yep, good times, good times.
Oh, yeah, Godzilla...
I only saw a brief clip from Godzilla before walking in, and the clip made it look like it was on par with Battle LA (which should have won an Oscar for best sound--that movie has exceptional sound engineering, the best I've ever heard). And even if it didn't reach Battle LA, surely it might be fun like Pacific Rim.
Godzilla is big, slow, and not the smartest monster on the block. He tends to randomly attack one skyscraper, and then walk away to attack a different one for no real reason.
And that's how I felt about the movie.
Kill the family story line, jump right into the Kaiju, and make some of these scenes take place in daylight and it might salvage the movie.
Graphics: Four Blenderheads (they weren't bad--but nothing new, nothing that pushed the rendering technology)
Story: Two Blenderheads
Better than: Monuments Men, A Winter's Tale (2014)
Worse than: Pacific Rim, Battle LA, Noah, World War Z
As good as: Godzilla (1998 starring Matthew Broderick), Battleship, King Kong (2005)
Theater or DVD: Cable? (the movie took place almost entirely at night which makes watching it on TV frustrating 'cuz you can't see anything without boosting the brightness to the point your retinas burn.)

- Spoilers!:
- So, imagine a man named Bill who is really knowledgeable about Honda cars. Show him any Honda and he can name the model and year. Not only that, but he can tell you about how that model was designed, where it was manufactured and what recalls there were. He is a great asset to Honda enthusiasts everywhere. He even gave a speech at a national Honda convention about the SRS light controversy--and was awarded the best speaker of the night. Yes, he's the true Honda man. One day Bill got transported by aliens to 1880 and he was stuck there forever. Then he died. Let's talk about Greg for the next 1 1/2 hours, who has no real connection to Bill in any way...
Greg likes to make monster puppets. But because the puppets are fragile they can only film them for a limited amount of time. In the dark. So to fill the rest of the film we'll show Greg's family. And talk about Hondas. And show a picture of Bill.

Re: Godzilla (Movie Review)
I guess I should add as a disclaimer that I walked in expecting Battle LA-quality story and sound. It's a tall order and I probably set myself up for disappointment on that.
The sound engineering on Godzilla was disappointingly flat--so much that I thought the surround sound system in the theater was off-line until I noticed "token" sounds and conversation coming from the side-mounted speakers, but it was a grossly underutilized tool in Godzilla.
Edit: Haha, I just past 300 posts. Blue star for me!

Awwwww... bummer. Oh, well. Thanks for the heads up though.
BTW, you paid to see Noah? Cinematography, graphics, and sound aside I just couldn't get past the idea that it wasn't the story of Noah.

Noah was interesting--like a smashing together of the Bible TV series, Titanic, and Transformers. Aside from a man named Noah and a boat full of animals, it didn't have the same story (well, moral of the story).
We see a lot of movies, probably every weekend. I don't make movie reviews for all of them, but here's abbreviated versions of several recent movies we went to the theater to watch:
- Godzilla: No, wait for cable.
- Transcendence: No, Netflix/Amazon worthy.
- Heaven Is For Real: No, it is Netflix/Amazon worthy, though. I thought they tried to show off the wife's body too much for a Christian film (angles, thin or tight shirt, maybe I just was letting my eyes wander), no effort to do a real investigation into the boy's claim, overly predicable story, an entirely white town? I will say the cinematography was "textbook correct". Maybe I'll do a separate review for this one...
- Captain America - Winter somethingorother: Yes, especially if you liked the first one.
- Noah: I'm torn--well, it's not in theaters any more so that made it easier actually. DVD it is!
- Son of God: If you saw the TV show, maybe. If you haven't, then yes, see it in the theater. Go as a family? Yes. It is very well done. Netflix otherwise.
- Winter's Tale: No. Absolutely not. Not even on TV.
- Monuments Men: No ...no. I so wanted this to be good, but no.
- Lego Movie: Yes! Purchase if you have kids (and watch the special features as a treat to yourself).
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: Yes!! A quality PG movie that has a real, true, moving story?! Absolutely.
- Saving Mr. Banks: Yes if you like Disney films or true stories, but not as good as I thought when I left the movie. Another adult-targeted PG movie, but this one will put the kids to sleep.
- Frozen: Yes! This is a great movie and one of the best Disney digital animated movies (cgi? I can't say 3d anymore...)
- Hunger Games - Something's on Fire: Yes, better than the first. Might sacrifice some during its transition to DVD.
- Thor - Another One: No, Netflix this one. Actually... just skip.
- Ender's Game: A firm yes. Valuable lessons in this movie--watch with your children. (Although I thought the social commentary at the end was unnecessary. I'm tired of "humans are an evil plague to this world who are only interested in killing each other and we're preventing the butterflies from living peaceful lives bla bla bla". Not that that's what they said, but the movie tilted it's hat to that line of thinking.)
- Captain Phillips: Yes! One of the most emotional endings in recent film. This movie will make you proud to be an American (for those of us who live in America). [It's an American thing. ]
- Gravity: Whoa YES! (in the theater).... Yeah that's cool (on the TV).... Don't bother on the iPhone.
- Cloudy with Predicable Meatballs 2 - How to Ruin the First Movie: No. DVD if you have time. Second thought, just watch the preview--all the better stuff is in the preview and the same story gets told in 90 seconds.
- Elysium: I wanted to watch this movie so much but they had to make it F-bomb heavy (55 according to www.kids-in-mind.com), so I never actually saw it.
- The Wolverine: If you liked X-Men: First Class or X-Men part one, then yes.
- R.I.P.D.: Sure (Netflix), it had some funny parts.
- Pacific Rim: Only if you want to get in touch with your inner 12-year old... No substance, but a fun movie.
- The Lone Ranger: It's a decent Netflix rental.
- World War Z: Yes, great movie.
- Man of Steel: Yes, this is a good "feel good" movie.
Upcoming: - X-Men: Days of Future Past (I'm so looking forward to this movie--in IMAX 2D!)
- Edge of Tomorrow
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (if you haven't seen the new one, I recommend doing so... it's a good movie.)
- Boxtrolls (not my cup of tea, but I think most 3d artists will enjoy it even thought it's stop/clay-motion.)
- Interstellar (I haven't seen any clips, but Christopher Nolan brings a fantastic team of cinematographers and writers on every project he does.)
- Hunger Games 3
{Go see in the theater?}
Recent/Upcoming movies to avoid* (I haven't seen these-but I look at the director's past work, the production studio, and the quality of the previews and source material to make a guestimation of theather-ticket-worthiness.)
- The Nut Job: Any studio that produces "Justin Bieber's Believe" is permanently placed in the Black Book. That and potty humor is inappropriate, sorry.
- Mr. Peabody and Sherman: DreamWorks is on my "research before buying" list. They have a bad habit of sneaking in curse words, sexual innuendo, and potty humor. Some flicks, like "How to Catch a Dragon" mostly escape this and end up as pretty good films.
- Rio 2: Same reason as above (Fox this time), but they make no attempt to cover it. Sony is the worst, actually. I have tried and given up on every Sony animation ever made.
- Spiderman 15: They are all the same... bad guy is purple in this one, but same story.
- Blended: Two of my least favorite actors together in one movie. Drew's grandfather, Lionel Barrymore, was an excellent actor (watch "You Can't Take it With You" or "Key Largo").
- Transformers 4: Two hours of incoherent story and heros that are 6'x10'x5' cars turning into multi-story/block-wide robots with ear-blistering noise and so much moving parts and short cuts that your eyes can't focus on what's going on??? No thanks.
- Disney's Planes 2: They have all these 3D assets just lying around in hard drives taking up space, that's the only thing I can think of.
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Unless your 12. Watch the preview, if that strikes your fancy then go for it.
- Northmen: A Viking Saga: Let's take a fantastic TV show (Vikings) and a money-making franchise (Lord of the Rings) and a terrible terrible movie ("In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale"--a must watch in the same way Sharknado is), and smush them together with too few actors and no post-production color correction. Toss in a few tax breaks for filming in those countries/townships, and we'll be on our way to the local Redbox in no time.
Re: Godzilla (Movie Review)
Interstellar is one I'm looking forward to.
I agree with your take on Dreamworks, and some of those animation studios. How to Train your Dragon was a really good movie; it had an awesome soundtrack (I have it in my playlist regularly), the story was good, and the visuals/animation held up. Things like Despicable Me 2, on the other hand, had excessive amounts of crude humor/gay jokes, etc. The movie was to a point where you stop giggling at the jokes, and just roll your eyes each time whilst waiting, hoping for a turn in the story.
One new movie that I did see recently, was Jack Ryan; Shadow Recruit. As a long time fan of Tom Clancy's work, I had been looking forward to this one. I was not disappointed. While it may not have been the most creative spy movie for non book readers, it held up pretty well to the books. "Jack" Pine's reactions, his relationship with his future wife, and his intelligent/upright character were all there. I finished the movie hoping they continued making these. If you like spy movies, also watch Spy Game if you haven't already.

Re: Godzilla (Movie Review)
Even one of the main actors didn't like Godzilla. ...for different reasons, BUT STILL!!
Re: Godzilla (Movie Review)
Yeah, I didn't realize Elysium was so F-bomb happy until we were in the middle of it. I was blinded by what I thought the movie was to be about and didn't do the homework on what it actually was.

Re: Godzilla (Movie Review)
- Nothing of importance here:
- I was reading an MPC interview with one producers or writers of Godzilla (this post isn't well researched, just FYI), and he said they killed off the main actor because his purpose had been fulfilled and they felt that he was just going to take up screen space... Rather than, I dunno, making his relevancy to the story more thought out or something.
Okay, I'm done ragging on Godzilla, lol.
