Packt 50% Off Sale
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is having a 50% off ebooks sale now through Monday. This isn't as good as their $5 sale, but since it's hard to know when they might have that sale, this might be a good time to pick stuff up if you are wanting to get some training in.
They have lots of Unity, Blender, and Python stuffs.

Thanks for the heads up Mike!
Just picked up:
Unity 2D Game Development
Blender 2.6 Cycles: Materials and Textures Cookbook
Blender Cycles: Lighting and Rendering Cookbook
Can't wait to dive into them next month when the semester is over.

Re: Packt 50% Off Sale
Yeah, thanks a lot!
I'm still deciding on what to pick up. Will let you know once I do...
EDIT:
Here's how my cart looks for now:
Blender Compositing and Post Processing [eBook]
Blender Cycles: Lighting and Rendering Cookbook [eBook]
Blender 2.6 Cycles: Materials and Textures Cookbook [eBook]
What I'm wondering, though is if I really need all of those books. I looked at the Table of Contents for each one of them and it seems that they kind of cancel out each other. I mean, in the Materials and Textures cookbook, you have examples for many materials. OK, but in the Lighting and Rendering book you have examples for some materials + you get how to composite. Well, yeah, but in the Compositing and Post Processing book I already have compositing. That was just a single example, of course, there are a few more. So it's kind of like, I pay for one book, just so I could read almost the same thing in another.
I pretty much got the modeling part right. I can make meshes both for games and for studio renders. I can also easily find my way around Blender, even when they change the GUI between versions. What I want to do now is to learn how to texture better, make better materials and make my renders better. You remember my '69 Camaro project? Well, I kind of want the end result to look professional. But, having the fact that I'm not getting any money out of it, I neither want to pay too much to learn how to finish it. I hope you get my point.
So what do you think? Is it really worth it to spend the extra money and get all of the 3 books?
EDIT2:
Now I'm leaning towards buying only the Lighting and Rendering book. Or maybe I should get the compositing book as well... Hmmm...

Re: Packt 50% Off Sale
If you bought the other Lighting and Rendering book I previously posted then I would pass on the Cycles version. Of the two left--materials and textures and composting, it will really come down to what you intend to focus on more. Blender offers us the opportunity to be the jack of all trades, but most artists specialize into a few areas. The compositing guy will rarely be the materials guy in a production environment.
Myself, I will be focusing on compositing because I want to start making mixed media animations. However, it sounds like you have a larger focus on making materials--so I think that one would be more up your alley.
If you did not get the lighting and rendering book I previously posted, then the Cycles lighting book might be a better bet than the other two. A well lit clay render will always look better than a badly-lit render with awesome textures.

That's something I haven't really thought about. Still, lone artists need to know a little something of everything and that's why I thought the Lighting and Rendering book to be the perfect one for me at the moment.BnBGobo99 wrote:Blender offers us the opportunity to be the jack of all trades, but most artists specialize into a few areas. Actually that's the only book I bought. Just decided not to bite more than I could chew
