Microvellum Fluid Designer

Post  BnBGobo99 on Fri Jan 31, 2014 9:05 pm

I'm not sure if this had made the rounds on BlenderNation yet or not, but this is pretty interesting.  Ton and the developer contacted each other following the release of this video and have hammered out an agreement to share the source code following release.  Fluid Designer will be released free, but the Microvellum assets and software collaboration tools will be at-cost.

[This video isn't the first version--the first version of the video had no reference to Blender at all, which caused quite a stir.]

Brilliant find Mike. Thanks a ton for sharing. This collaboration is extremely interesting. Potentially gaining the extended functionality displayed in this video would be a godsend, let alone if blender gained the architectural tools, and or a marketplace for selling architectural assets. This is exciting on Many levels. I will keep my eye on the development of this project closely. Now if only Cycles would allow you to bake textures...it would be a perfect fit for game asset creation. But, yeah, great find.  Cool

I can't find the quote at the moment, but Cycles texture baking is coming "very soon".

Hm..That's really good news. If you do happen to come across news about it, I really hope you'll keep me posted. Even a loose timeframe would be nice. Yeah, this interior design project is stellar. I hope it goes smoothly. It could open alot of doors for Blender in general. I mean, even the way parametric objects are handled in Blender. I love how the objects retain editability in the video. Awesome.  Cool

According to Jonathan Williamson:
There is not currently [a way to bake textures in Cycles], but likely will be soon. We just need baking support in Cycles (which is tentatively in development) [posted on Jan 29, 2014]

So, not as solid of a answer as I remembered it to be, but since he's on the Blender dev team now, he has better insight into what's going on so hopefully it's more than just a "yeah, we want to get to that... eventually" and more a "I've already coded 80%, just a few more mods here and there".

Yeah Micro Vellum looks pretty cool, i think it certainly has its own niche.
Archimesh Addon does a great job too..however it doesnt come with bundled textures and such.

However what Micro Vellum does is not an uncommon thing with 3D packages..theres alot of CAD Packs that have a similar approach.
I'm not sure if it would help me for my work, guess it will do a good job quickly distributing stuff around your scene....but for facades and the cubature of buildings one is better of modelling by himself / or drawing in CAD and exporting properly.

Thanks for sharing, i closely follow the most add ons that incorporate features that can help with workflow between CAD and 3D packages.

Give me proper layer management in blender already, pwetty please .
