Captain Phillips (movie review)

Captain Phillips is a well-done and emotional movie.  Tom Hanks, in my mind, is one of our generation's finer actors; and he earns his pay in this film.

Although there is a heavy amount of shakey-cam and digital noise in low-light shots, the film's impact still comes through strongly.  Based on my untrained perspective, this looks like a four-act movie--with a third act that drags out a little long.  Never-the-less, it's an interesting telling (even if a bit inaccurate) of the 2009 pirate hijacking of a shipping freighter, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years (according to IMDB).

Visuals: 3-blenderheads (no noticeable CG effects to gauge, shakey-cam drops it down)
Overall: 4-blenderheads (mild cursing, violence, blood).
Better than: District 9, Master and Commander, The Green Mile
Not as good as: The Life of Pi, Forrest Gump
Equal to: Cast Away, Larry Crowne
