Scott's Idea Dump

Post  Yodaman921 on Mon Oct 07, 2013 11:42 am

So after looking at Mike's "Bunnie" thread I came to the realization that I haven't made anything in a long time. (Yes there is Plasmid Paul, but that was mainly flat plans and was too graphic intensive). It's one of these things where like most people, you get busy with life (senior in college here, graduate in Dec '14). Seems like everybody else got busy too, not many people post here nowadays or go on the IRC.
I then started going over all the ideas I've had, old and new, of things I wanted to make at some point and decided it might be a good idea to post them here. And *hopefully*, make a bit of progress on them. Maybe around once a week do a model/sketch for one of the ideas and maybe jump between ideas too. So without anymore delays, here are my ideas:

Shorts:
Wandering Eyes - Now most of you should be familiar with this one. Those that aren't, it's about a boy who throws out a broken toy and the toy comes alive to rebuild itself. The boy discovers this and realized just because something is broke it isn't worthless and helps the robot repair itself. He then plays with it for a bit before going to bed. When he wakes though, the robot is missing and he realizes that it was just a dream. He then rushes to the trash can to save his toy from the approaching garbage truck only to reach it when it's too late. Defeated and starting to walk away, the garbage man holds out his hand with the broken toy in it. Happily the boy snatches it up and runs back to the house. It ends with the boy playing with a fixed up version of the toy.

Untitled Romance - This is about a guy who is stuck in the rut of everyday life and as such his life is gray (they whole short will be primarily grayscale). One day in his cubicle he sees a flash of red from the street down below and sees that it's a beautiful woman. Then the chase begins, he runs out of his office trying to catch up with her, but she always seems to be one step ahead. Throughout the chase the main character slowly goes from being grayscale to color. He sees her go into a cafe and realizes this is his chance, but upon reaching the cafe he looks in to see her with another man. All his color and the color from the woman wash away to grayscale. He then walks to a park and slumps on a bench. It ends with a woman jogging past in full color, he sees her and the color starts to come back to him as well.

Still Images:
Superhero Kids - This would be a collection of stills all about kids dressing up and pretending to be superheros on a playground. Some of the shots would be like a kid as Spider-man swinging on a monkey bars. Another would be a girl as Wonderwoman jumping rope (lasso). Superman jumping off a swing as if flying. Etc.

Then and Now - This idea would be to take a render I made from the first couple of months I did Blender and to basically redo it and then have a comparison between my skills then and now.

Composites:
Lego X-Wing - So in my room I have a lego x-wing. What I'd want to do is recreate it in model form and then create a short animation of it taking off and then flying around my room. Main focus would be on getting the model to look like the actual object.

Pokemon - So this would be another short animation. I'd model/rig a pokemon and then composite into a video of it walking around/interacting with objects in the room. Main focus would be character model/rig/animation.

Games:
Untitled Koala Project - This game would be a 3D 3rd person action/adventure game. The story is still being fleshed out, but it would be where the main character (a koala) is a scientist working with his colleague trying to figure out the meaning of life. One night he leaves work early while his colleague is working on an experiment. The experiment opens a trans-dimensional portal in which a huge monster with tentacles tries to escape. The colleague tries to stop the experiment, but in the process gets sucked through the portal before it shuts down. The next day the main character shows up to the lab to see it in ruin and his colleague presumed dead, he then decides to stop pursuing his goal. His colleague on the other hand is now stuck in a dangerous world and works for to figure out how to get home. After many years he comes finds out that he's just apart of a video game. Enraged that some project manager made his life that way, he sets out to change the code of the game, thus becoming the villain. The changes he makes then ripples out to where the main character is, and he sets out to figure out what is going wrong in his world.

Untitled Friends Project - Since all of my roommates are seniors as well and getting ready for what's beyond graduation. I thought it'd be neat to make a small little game where me and my 3 roommates are playable characters and we go around killing zombies or aliens or something. Each one of us would have specialty items that we are known for, like one of my friends is a bassoonist so his primary attack would be to hit things with his bassoon and then secondary would be to play music on the bassoon which would turn enemies passive. Another would have a longboard which he could hit things with or ride, the final would have headphones which could be used as a whip or to swing across to areas. Then for me I'd have a cart that I can either run things over with or carry items in. Overall this one is very much in rough stages, but I think it'd be neat to do.

2D:
Untitled Comic - This last one I think it'd be fun to do, but it would just be a simple web comic series. The basic premise would be about typical college life and some of the crazy things that happen.

So yeah, these are most of the ideas floating around my head at the moment. If I have forgotten any I'll add them to this list. And hopefully soon I'll start making parts of these and throwing them up here as well. Very Happy

Man, I can't believe it's your senior year already. I remember when you were just talking about going to college! We're all getting old. Laughing

I'm really looking forward to all of your projects developing, Scott. Please keep us posted on all your workings (that and I've missed you not being around much on the forum--in the most manly way I can say that).

At one of the DC SIGGRAPH meetings they had a fella there who does biology- and medical-themed renders. You're in engineering, right? (chemical? I can't recall)--but ever thought about doing something along those lines (a career mixing CG and your degree together)? [I also met the woman who does the NTSB animations--pretty neat group of folks we have around the area.]

Yeap, I've got a friend that's a Neuro surgeon and he was telling me about this guys he knows and works with from time to time that does medical illustrations. Apparently the guy doesn't want for work or money... let's just put it that way! I'd love to get involved in that. Might oughta look into something along those lines, if for nothing else than some extra cash. Twisted Evil

Thanks everyone!
I swear, it's always typical in that right when I start to think about starting a project for fun, I get slammed with a bunch of school stuff. Anyway, I just wanted to give a bit of a progress report as to where I'm headed/which project I'm going to start with. So, for me the superhero kids idea is currently sticking out the most as the one that I'm tackling first. The main reason is that there's a set result I have in mind, unlike the game ideas where I could potentially be spending months just figuring out what to do/create for it.

Initially I was planning for the 'superhero' kids to just be kids showing up to school dressed as their favorite character. But the more I thought about it, the harder it got. Sure I could have the kid as Superman wearing blue jeans, a superman shirt, and a red blanket for a cape; but then what about if I wanted The Thing from the Fantastic Four or even Spider-man. Would the Spider-man kid have a cheap plastic store bought mask or face paint? So the more and more I thought about it, there was just a lot of potential 'issues'.

Then I decided that this will be the actual superheros, but as kids. I thought to myself, if this hero/heroine was at a playground, who would they be hanging around, and what would the be doing? And the more I thought of it, the more I liked where it was going. As such I ended up making a potential list of heroes/heroines and the activities they would be doing. It's a bit ambitious if I try to do all of it, but hopefully I can get some nice renders from this idea. (I'm still debating as to whether or not I want to include powers or not.)

List of potential shots:
Superman - He would be on a swing in the process of jumping off, giving him the feeling of flying.
Spider-man - Swinging on the monkey bars, hand out as if shooting webs.
Wonderwoman/Supergirl/Batgirl - Supergirl and Batgirl would be holding each end of a jump rope (it'll look like Wonderwomans lasso of truth), with Wonderwoman jumping in the middle.
Captain America/Ironman - They'd be in an open area playing frisbee, but the frisbee is Captain America's shield.
Batman/Robin - On playgrounds there's usually those animals/vehicles on springs that rock back and forth. Batman is in one that looks like the Batmobile and Robin is on a motorcycle one.
Green Arrow/Black Canary - Simply on a teeter totter.
Deadpool - At a picnic table gorging himself on chimichungas.
Aquaman/Flash - Flash is playing keep away with Aquaman's pet goldfish.
Fantastic Four - Playing four square.

So yeah, kind of an ambitious list. Hopefully I'll start working on one of the characters soon. Very Happy

I'm glad you crossed this one out. It's not even half as original as your later idea, to say the least Wink

Now that's creativity at its best. I like that kind of witty projects. I'm really wondering if you kind of stitch the renders together and leave 'em on a site somewhere without leaving nay additional info, how many people will actually get the idea of the renders quick enough. Smile

And damn, for this single project you'll have to work on more organic modeling than I have done in my entire 3D experience. Embarassed
Just keep at it. This project sounds great and if executed properly, it will give some awesome results.

Hey Gabriel, that looks like a pretty neat contest. And as much as I'd like to start working on my project, it just seems time is not on my side. Hopefully I'll have some time during winter break at the end of December. Also, for my project, the kids won't be babies, but rather 6-10 years old. Still need to get around to doing some sketches of the style of body types I want to go with.

Here's a little update since the last time I updated this was a little over a month ago. So in terms of school I only have 1 exam left in the semester on Friday. At that point I'll have a little over 2 weeks for Winter Break. I'm hoping to start making some head way for the superhero works that I want to do during that time.

In the mean time. Here's a totally non-3D work that I've been working on. It's a scarf based off of the one in the video game Journey. Hopefully I'll have a finished scarf while winter is still going on. (side note: this is the first thing I've ever knitted, and I think it's turning out quite nicely all things considering)

I hope everybody has enjoyed the holidays (happy early new years too), here's some progress on a few things.

Scarf: finished 2 symbols and there's 6 to go. I'm really happy with how this is going (few issues here and there, but hey it's my first ever scarf). Once done I'll be making another scarf for a friend of mine and then trying my hand at knitted plushes (characters from games/animals/etc).

'front' side:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

'back' side:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(coloring is not the most accurate, but that's what I get when I take a picture at night in a poorly lit room... if I remember tomorrow I'll try taking new pictures with better lighting)

And then for my superhero project, I'm working up a character base at the moment. The first scene I'm working towards is the jump rope one (batgirl, supergirl, and wonder woman), as such this is the girl base. Went through a couple of bases to get to this one, which I'm pretty happy with. The head is just a modified cube acting as a placeholder until I get a real head on there. I'm hoping to have the base finished and to start working on one of the characters before school starts back up on the 7th.

Very cool! How long do you think that scarf will end up being? Do you think you could take a screenie of the wires of the character? I'd be interested in seeing what sort of mesh flow you got going there because it looks pretty good!

Given some initial rough estimates (seeing how many stitches per inch wide it is and then applying that to the length), it seems like it'll be around 7.5 feet long (2.286 meters).
Here is a wire shot of the character. Hoping to get a head on there soon.

Alrighty, so character base update #2. I'm liking how the skin shader turned out. The eyes, not so much, mainly a place holder until I figure out something better. And then the head... I like the head, but not for *this* character. It's one of these things where I'm going for maybe 10 years old, but with the current head I feel like it's giving off an older age. I may look at widening the head out a bit, or maybe changing the eyes up. Any ideas for giving the character a more youthful appearance is appreciated.

Hi Scott, that's a neat scarf (:
Regarding your character, if it's supposed to be a 10 year old girl, I'd give her a plain chest instead of breasts... Also, I found this proportion sheets that may help you:

Thanks Gabriel.
As for those resources, those may come in handy. The thing is, I'm trying to go for a more stylized/cartoony look. I've been using the following images as sort of references/idea points:

So like always, the issue pops up for me with getting the right proportions/shapes and then coloring when I get to that point.

Hmmm... I'd go for the large eyes and smaller mouth as well as shorten the overall height of the head. Of course that might completely change what you were going for, but to me that seems to make for a more "youthful" look.

Alrighty, bit of a change here. I was going through some reference images, trying to find a nice body type/style, and stumbled across one that seemed like it'd be good. Ended up duplicating my old model and doing some resizing for most of it, had to reconstruct the head to accommodate the new position/sizes for the mouth, nose, and eyes. Once I rendered it, it was pretty 'ugly', but I'm pretty sure it was due to the large skull. So I gave the character a quick and temporary hairdo, rerendered it, and am pretty pleased with the results. I might go forward with this new design or just keep trying out various body types to see what one I like best. (I know they're only placeholders, but man those eyes are killing me every time I see them...)

Scott,
I only skimmed thru this thread briefly so far, but I'm really glad to see you haven't lost a bit of imagination or motivation. I saw alot of promising ideas and concepts here, and I'm glad you haven't forgotten about Wandering Eyes, (yay!)

I want to comment on the character you've posted here, but I suspect she might have changed since your last post. I'm looking forward to seeing updates on this.  Very Happy

@Dobi: For the scarf it's all by hand. As for how I get the shapes, it's actually not too hard. The way the stitches are, it's like a giant grid, in which each stitch is represented by a colored square and that's the color yarn that needs to be knitted. (I actually made my pattern in Blender)

@Dave: Hey there! I'm glad to see you around. Unfortunately with the newest characters, there hasn't been much in the way of updates. It's entering the 3rd week of classes here and I'm already swamped with group projects. And what little free time I do have, I've been working on the scarf since it'd be nice to finish that up while it's still freezing outside.

Oh, nice. Glad to hear you're keeping busy. Congrats on graduation too, btw! The scarf looks really cool too. Looking at it and thinking about the way it's constructed, sort of reminds me of 8 bit game art like the old school consoles. Funny how two seemingly unique things can be so similar sometimes.

I noticed some of your props and characters in the other thread too. Really cool stuff there. Interesting to see your models rigged in 3d Max's CAT. If there's ever any more updates on that project, I'd like to see 'em.

As for your superhero character project, the concept is awesome. Even without settling on a character design I think she has her own sort of appeal. Seems her proportions just need some more adjusting. If you are trying to make her design fit a look someone (here) might expect ( even yourself ), continuing to alter her proportions might help might help make the resemblance more obvious. Moving stuff around with the sculpt grab brush on a shape key is nice for quick trials and adjustments to the proportions. Another option might be to use a lattice or mesh deform cage. This way you can morph thru the changes and work non destructively. Might require a retopo sometimes, but if you if you like the way it looks, it's usually worth it. Proportions are everything to characters. If you think you're being too attentive, you're usually not. Check out some of these great character designs. I think for someone of your experience with 3d, sometimes simply *picking* a strong character design is harder than the actual creation of the character itself.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This one is kinda cool because it shows how much you can change the 'feel' of a character just by changing the proportions of it.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This one is kinda cool cause it helps reveal some of the appeal to disney styled characters.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This one is cool because, well, I really think it suits your concept well.

I know I'm not giving any specific advice yet, but I hope this helps so far.  Cool

Thanks for all of that Dave!

Funny thing about 8-bit and scarves, the next scarf I'm making is for a friend of mine and she wanted it to be Legend of Zelda themed, so it'll have an 8-bit triforce on each end.  Cool
